Universal invests $5 million in new laundry technology
For a business built on cleanliness, the creation of a new, state-of-the-art commercial laundering plant has been a bit of a mess for Universal, a Louisville-based textile services company. But after several setbacks, CEO Tom Austin can't mask his pride while reporting that the $5 million, 50,000-square-foot facility is fully operational and finally working at a level consistent with his expectations.
With the completion of the expansion and renovation project, Universal, formerly known as Universal Linen Service LLC, has two plants on its 7-acre property at South Seventh Street and Commerce Road, in the Park Hill neighborhood.
The new facility, housed in a building constructed in 1924, features all new washing, sorting, drying, ironing and folding systems capable of processing 260,000 to 280,000 pounds of laundry per week.
